India beat USA by 7 wickets
Right then, that is it from this entertaining encounter and from New York as well as this was the last game of the World Cup here. India goes through to the next round while USA have it all to do in their last game. However, the action continues as we have a big clash coming up on 13th June, Thursday. It is West Indies taking on New Zealand and that game will begin at 6 am IST (12.30 am GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
Rohit Sharma, the victorious skipper of India says they lost a couple of big guns early on but it was nice to see SKY and Dube keep their calm and build that partnership. Adds that they knew the bowlers will have to take the lead as scoring runs is difficult here. Appreciates the bowlers, especially Arshdeep Singh who bowled a brilliant spell and says he provided a perfect start for them. On being asked about Shivam Dube's bowling, he says they want options with the ball as well and to use them when they feel the need moving forward. Adds it is a big relief to advance to the Super 8s as playing here wasn't easy. Adds you really have to stick to the end and take the game as deep as possible and says luckily they have managed to pull through in all the three games they have played here. Also appreciates Suryakumar Yadav by saying that his game has also elevated to a new level now and that's exacty what he expects from a senior player like him. Ends up by saying that his partnership with Shivam Dube was a crucial one that took them home.
Aaron Jones, the captain of USA says that they were 10-15 runs short on this wicket. Adds that he is proud of his bowlers for taking the game close and it was pleasing to see. Mentions that it is time to revamp, they will have a few meetings and then will go hard against Ireland. Says that the wicket was tricky and he thought seamers were the best option. Ends by saying that Monank Patel should be fit for the next match.
Arshdeep Singh is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his career-best figures of (4-0-9-4). He begins by saying that he enjoyed and is very happy with the performance. Tells that the talk in the dressing room is to not provide easy balls to score as the batters will have to work hard to get those runs on a difficult wicket to bat on. On being asked about bowling at the death, he says he tries to bowl more yorkers and build pressure on the opposition batters and has learnt a lot from Jasprit Bumrah. Adds he tries to keep it simple and expects to perform well in the next phase of the tourament as well.
Presentation Time...
Earlier in the game, USA posted a fighting total on the board courtesy of a good knock from Nitish Kumar along with some contributions from Steven Taylor and Corey Anderson. Arshdeep Singh was sensational for India and ended up with a four-fer. Hardik Pandya picked up a couple while Axar Patel chipped in with one. While chasing, it was tricky for India losing the big guns early, but Suryakumar Yadav kept his calm and along with Shivam Dube took them over the line.
USA, on the other hand, should be pleased with their bowling effort as they made India work really hard for every run. Saurabh Netravalkar provided them a dream start by getting rid of Virat Kohli and then got Rohit Sharma as well. They couldn't pick up wickets for a while but checked the runs to keep the pressure on. Ali Khan came in and dismissed Rishabh Pant with a magnificent delivery but they couldn't build on that. Saurabh Netravalkar also dropped SKY when the game was in the balance and that ultimately cost them in the end. USA were also penalised five penalty runs and that brought their morale further down as after that, the batters just took the game away from them.
India were rocked early on when Virat Kohli departed for a golden duck and then Rohit Sharma also fell cheaply. Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the ship nicely and build up an important partnership. The former was dismissed but SKY held one end, and even though Shivam Dube struggled, he did not gave his wicket away and supported well. SKY was also given a life and he made full use of it as he went to score an unbeaten half-century while Dube hit the winnings run and this is exactly what India would have wanted going into the next round.
HAT-TRICK OF WINS FOR INDIA! With that, they also book their place in the Super-8 stage as group winners. However, this was not easy as USA gave a tough fight with the ball. This is also the highest successful chase at this ground in this World Cup and it is all smiles in the Indian hut.
