Right then! That is it from the first ODI of this series. The hosts kick off the series with a win on their 1000th ODI. The second ODI will be played on Wednesday, 9th February at 1:30 pm IST (8 am GMT). But the build up will begin much in advance. Do join us for that. Till then, Adios and cheers!
Yuzvendra Chahal is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. He says that he felt good, he knew Sundar had taken two wickets in an over and created pressure, and he wanted to do the same. Mentions that he wanted to pitch it up, and maintain the pace. States that the pace was important on this wicket since it would slow up. He did try to bowl according to the wicket. Adds that he wanted to improve since his previous games in South Africa, and he saw his previous games three-four times also he spoke to Rohit Sharma and the coaches who told him ways to improve and he worked on that. States that he knew the batters would go after him if he tossed the deliveries up, but he stuck to his plans.
Rohit Sharma, the skipper of India, says he does not believe in a perfect game as a side can’t always be perfect but he believes it was a great effort by everyone. Mentions they could not lose so many wickets with the bat and they could have created more pressure in the middle overs with the ball but the boys were really good. States they want to keep getting better as a team and they should be able to achieve what the team wants, they do not feel they need to change a lot and they just need to challenge themselves to do something different. Also says he was practicing back home, he knew they have a long season and they had a good net session here too and he was confident heading into this game. Admits the pitch had something in it for the bowlers and in this game the toss was important, he though does not want to depend a lot on the toss but he would always want to take advantage if they do win it.
Kieron Pollard, the skipper of West Indies, says losing with 22 overs to spare is a heavy defeat. Adds the batting let them down and they need to improve there. Mentions they need to dig deeper, they have all been guilty of making mistakes but it has been difficult, he credits guys for turning up and he feels the bowlers did well and if they put on runs, they could compete. Reckons the toss is going to be crucial, the ball held in the surface when they batted first and they need to find a way to win in two days' time. Also says Holder bats low as that suits the combination of the team and he has a role to play and they are happy he has been doing well and he hopes he can continue. Ends by saying there are a few positives and they will see what happens in a couple of days.
Stay tuned for the presentation...
Suryakumar Yadav is down for a chat. He says things were really clear, he did not tell Hooda anything and he knew he had to stay there till the end and he was confident. Adds he just wants to enjoy the game and it is going very well. Informs about his banter with Pollard. Reckons with the dew coming in, it was difficult for the bowlers to grip but it was about the same as the first innings.
Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan got India off to a flier. Rohit scored a half-ton on his return to the side. Then there was a period in play that belonged to the Windies where Joseph bowled brilliantly along with Akeal Hosein and the visitors managed to get 4 quick wickets. Hooda and Yadav though ensured there were no surprises and played responsibly to take their side over the line.
Quite a comprehensive win for the Indians and they have taken a 1-0 lead in the series. They were on song right from the start. After winning the toss and electing to field, their bowlers, especially their spinners ran through the batting line-up of West Indies. Had it not been for Holder’s half-ton, West Indies would have been bundled out for around 110-120. His knock gave some respectability to the score but by no way that was going to be enough.
